Advice on Building a Cheap At-Home Sauna with Heat Bulbs

Question:
I want to build a sauna on a sled of sorts to avoid a building permit. >> I am thinking of using a one burner propane stove under lava rocks for >> heat. I think for a family of four an adequate size is 4x8. Anyone >> have any ideas or cautions about this?

Answer:
I built something like this several years ago. It is 8'x8'x8' with 4x8 sheets of cedar on the inside, R-11 (? 4" thick) insulation, 4x8 T1-11 panels on the outside. I was planning a one burner propane, but for simplicity, decided to use a standard 220v 3kw electric room heater, so this is mostly a dry sauna. When we want a wet heat, we use a water spray bottle to spray mist into the air. About 8 or 10 squeezes on the bottle after reaching temperature makes it plenty moist.

I have found that the 8x8 foot print is just right for 4 adults on two 2'x8' benches. I think the 4x8 that you are planning might be too small.

The heater works very well. On a 30F night, it takes only about 20 minutes to heat the room to 95F.
