Question:
The problem is that any prescriptions, health aids are only tax
> deductible if it equals 3% of your taxable income. Last year
> everything I bought didn't quite make it. Besides I have no money now
> to buy anything anyway.
Answer:
I'm one of those odd FM'rs with heat, rather than cold, intolerance. My
doctor signed a form for the electric company stating that I have an
illness that requires me to have a very cool home for optimum health. It
doesn't affect my taxes, I just get a straight discount on my electric
bill. Since I live in the Mojave Desert and keep the cooler running 24/7
for 5 or 6 month out of the year, this is a substantial savings.
Also, we have a pool that uses a solar cover. My doctor said that if we
decided to put in a gas heater, he would sign the same forms for the gas
company saying that warm water therapy is necessary blah, blah, blah....
These "disability" discounts are available for most utilities if you can
honestly tie it to a significant improvement in your ability to function,
and have a doctor who is willing to sign the paperwork.
