Yes. It's not uncommon for gas appliances to have a gas valve connection
smaller than the required pipe size branch. For example: What is usually
done is 3/4" pipe is run to a 3/4 x 1/2 tee with a drip leg on the bottom.
The 1/2 branch of the tee is connected to the gas valve of the appliance by
a short nipple.
Gas piping is sensitive to pipe restriction because of the low pressure
pushing the gas. A piping system designed according to code will allow no
more than a pressure drop of .5" water column anywhere in the system.
